SilverChicks supports Ethiopia Reads & Zethiopia Literacy Campaign

Take One Book Literacy Campaign for Ethiopia

EthiopiaReads.org in collaboration with Zethiopia is launching a new literacy campaign to coincide with the Millennium Celebration that will take place in Ethiopia during 2007.

Ethiopia Reads, founded in 2003, has a mission to improve literacy and create a culture of reading in Ethiopia, and Ethiopia Reads does this by planting libraries and publishing books in local languages – and offering continuing education programs to help educators in Ethiopia nurture a love of reading.

Since Ethiopia Reads opened Ethiopia’s first free children’s library in 2003, thousands of children have experienced the joy of reading, they logged 60,000 visits to the library in 2006. Ethiopia Reads sees first hand the difference that one library, ONE BOOK, and one story can make in the life of a child.

If you or someone you know is traveling to Ethiopia during 2007, Zethiopia and Ethiopia Reads challenge you to TAKE ONE BOOK with you, because we believe that education is hope and books can change lives.

For more information on the TAKE ONE BOOK campaign, please contact Catie Dupont at ethiopiareads@aol.com.

Books can be dropped off at Shola Children’s Library. Shola is located in Beklo-bet, behind the Dashen bank off of Debre Zeit road.

WILL YOU TAKE ONE BOOK?

Joy - Gorgeous Necklace by Aziza!

Joy! - Fabulous Three Strand Kazuri Necklace by Aziza

Feast your eyes on this lovely three strand necklace, and then imagine it accenting one of your outfits - either casual or dress. Wouldn't it change the look and probably the evening? Everyone will be dying to know where you found such an amazing necklace!

This necklace is comprised of fabulous pieces. The 20 mm beads are Kazuri beads, which are hand made, kiln fired and hand painted by a women's co-operative located in the suburbs of Nairobi, Kenya. So, you are not only enhanced by this piece -- you are helping support other women in the world.

The rondell beads between the Kazuri (perfect match, isn't it?) are hand blown lamp work beads and connecting all of this beauty are cleary czech light blue bi-cone crystals.

Finishing the piece is a silver clasp from Thailand and the accent pink beads at the top of each necklace are vintage Japanese 8 mm dimple beads from the 1950's. The longest strand of the necklace measures 24 inches and the shortest strand measures 18 inches.

You can find this necklace on SilverChicks.com and in our Amazon store.

SEED Celebration of Africa WeekJanuary 17-18, 2007

Dear Staff, Parents, Family Members and SEED Community;

Two very special events are taking place at The SEED School.

On Wednesday January 17th, 2007, the MS2 eighth grade community will be hosting the 1st SEED Celebration of Africa Fair. This celebration will highlight our student’s work exploring, mapping, and learning about the complexities and treasures of the African continent and a particular African nation.

Joining our student presentations will be a short film by SEED students who traveled last summer in Ethiopia as part of the LearnServe Ethiopia Project.

A participation-based show by the Malcolm X African Drummers and Dancers will also be part of this special event. Please mark the date and arrive promptly by 4:30 so you can visit all of our student presentations.

A 1$ suggested entrance fee will raise money for Ethiopia Reads, which builds libraries for students in the capital city of Addis Ababa, and whom SEED Students will be working with in the LearnServe Program.
